Höfe am Brühl, Leipzig (GER)

Architecture unites modernity and tradition - Digitally printed glass fronts with TG-THERM®plus

The shopping centre that is located in the heart of Leipzig opened in September 2012. Built in an area steeped in tradition, the arcade is divided into four areas of different themes, which also differ from each other in the design of their facades. Alongside the restored, listed metal facades, there are also impressive, digitally printed facades from Thiele Glas.

The Brühl was known as the world’s fur capital until the Second World War. It was the most important street in the city and greatly contributed to Leipzig’s reputation as a blossoming trade centre. The architects’ plans for Höfe am Brühl were based on the historical role of the location. Accordingly, the building ensemble has a basic structure for commercial activity with alleyways and courtyards, steps and bridges, as well as private green spaces for apartments on the roof. Alongside impressive facade glazing with 19th century style motifs, Thiele Glas has also provided parts of the shop window glazing as well as further glass elements for both the interior and exterior of the building complex.

For the depiction of late nineteenth century Leipzig buildings, Thiele Glas produced a total of approx. 2,900 m2 of TG-THERM®plus UN insulating glass panes, which are divided into a total of eight different facade sections. Each of the 700 TG-THERM®plus UN insulating glass panels features a unique printed motif, and they are also finished with step edges of varying widths. Each digitally printed pane has been given its own unique code in order to facilitate the production, glazing and reordering processes for the long term. The exterior motif panes are digitally produced with TG-PRINTdigital on 12 mm TG-PROTECT®-TVG (safety glass with double TVG glazing). The interior panels are made of 12 mm  TG-PROTECT®-TVG with a UNII coating and grey coloured TG-TVG with a black TG-PRINT striped pattern. This additional refining of the glass fronts makes the motifs on the exterior panes even more visible. The 2,800 TG-TVG single panes were manufactured at the Thiele Glas sites in Schrozberg and Wermsdorf, which presented a particular challenge in terms of production and logistics. The glass panes have a maximum width of 2,800 mm and a maximum height of 4,900 mm and offer close to 100 % UV protection.
