Citytunnel Leipzig (GER)
The Leipzig City Tunnel is the heart of the Central German regional express network. With its start-up in December 2013 the local public transport system could be reorganized radically.
Via the stations ‘Hauptbahnhof’, ‘Markt’, ‘Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz’ & ‘Bayrischer Bahnhof‘ you can reach the underground railway barrier-free. The appearance of the stations is characterized by architectural particularities and impacted by incisive spaces of light. Quick access, brightness, transparency were the guiding principles considered in the planning. Every station has its individual design according to its location and function. Light comes in through a wide variety of glazing elements. Thiele Glas produced laminated safety and insulating glass for the entrance buildings, balustrades and hoist shafts of the stations ‘Markt’, ‘Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz’ and ‘Bayrischer Bahnhof’.
Thus 800 square meter roof glazing TG-PROTECT® out of 2 x 12 mm TG-TVG provide safety and a lot of incident daylight for the ‘Bayrischer Bahnhof’ station. For the two entrance buildings and hoist shafts 24 mm thick point-fixed laminated safety glass is used. The architecture of this station creates a distinctive ensemble of historical and new building parts.
The ‘Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz’ station in the southern city center possesses a north and south access each provided with stairs, escalators and elevators. Architecturally the entrance building convinces by the application of simple and clear structures. The glass used for the glazing elements and elevators is also 24 mm thick TTG-PROTECT®.
In the city center regional-express trains stop 22 m below the market square. Two separate entrances – one in the northern and one in the southern end – lead into the modern station hall. Barrier-free access enables the elevator of the northern entrance. For the elevator tower Thiele Glas fabricated TG-THERM®plus and TG-PROTECT® out of 2 x 10 mm TG-ESG® which is decorated with ceramic digital print in striped look and logoprint.
